Meet The Surgeon

What are the side effects of a Gastric Band?

Complications with gastric bands are very rare. It is 3 times safer to have a gastric band implanted than having your gall bladder removed. However, the gastric band has fallen out of favour in recent years because it has an unacceptably high longer term complication rate. At least 1 in 5 patients will typically have to undergo revisional surgery to treat a complication such as band slippage or erosion. Some European centres that favoured the gastric band many years ago are now reporting long-term band removal rates of about 60% because of either poor weight loss or the development of complications.
