He became the Senior Surgeon and Lead for the Oesophago-Gastric (OG) Unit at the MRI, increased the number of OG cancer operations by 10-fold, developed a full minimally invasive (keyhole) oesophago-gastric cancer surgery service and delivered a comprehensive NHS bariatric service at the MRI.

Alan has finally ‘hung up his rugby boots’ and now pursues his interests in mountain biking, climbing, winter mountaineering, windsurfing and tennis. He also has more sedate interests as a violinist, pianist and calligrapher. He continues to run his parents’ fish and chip shops but his passion is to single-handedly run his sheep farm and to develop a fully self-sufficient and self-sustainable life. Any spare time is spent herding his animals or his children.
