Alan was educated in Oxford and graduated from the University of Bristol Medical School. His early apprenticeship took him to Manchester and Yorkshire as a Surgical Trainee and the University Tutor in Surgery at Leeds.
Having completed his training in Scotland, Alan obtained a fellowship to the National Cancer Centre Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, followed by a prestigious one year position as the Senior Clinical Fellow at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, where he developed his practice in thoracosopic and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for oesophageal and gastric cancer, reflux and hiatus hernia and started his practice in bariatric surgery.
Alan was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) in 2007. He became the Senior Surgeon and Lead for the Oesophago-Gastric (OG) Unit at the MRI, increased the number of OG cancer operations by 10-fold, developed a full minimally invasive (keyhole) oesophago-gastric cancer surgery service and delivered a comprehensive NHS bariatric service at the MRI.
Alan is a consultant Upper GI, Oesophago-Gastric and General Surgeon with 15 years’ experience and is now an expert and experienced leading cancer, reflux and bariatric surgeon in Greater Manchester and the North West. He provides training, mentorship and support for other surgeons in cancer, reflux and bariatric surgery and his bariatric practice now includes both routine weight loss surgery as well as complex revision operations.
Ongoing advances within his practice now include Minimally Invasive Surgery (laparoscopic/keyhole) for cancer, LINX for reflux, 365 Balloon, endoscopic techniques for weight loss including endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty/plication (ESG) and gastric bypass revision, minimal scar and single incision (SILS) surgery and training in robotic surgery.
Alan has finally ‘hung up his rugby boots’ and now pursues his interests in mountain biking, climbing, winter mountaineering, windsurfing and tennis. He also has more sedate interests as a violinist, pianist and calligrapher. He continues to run his parents’ fish and chip shops but his passion is to single-handedly run his sheep farm and to develop a fully self-sufficient and self-sustainable life. Any spare time is spent herding his animals or his children.
