Professor Carel le Roux graduated in South Africa, and completed his medical training in London at St Bartholomew’s and the Hammersmith Hospital. He has an international reputation as one of the most eminent non-surgical bariatric physicians and has featured on several national TV programmes. An excellent communicator and an outstanding researcher, Carel’s work is known throughout the world. He has received awards from the President of Ireland, the National Institute Health Research in the UK, the Wellcome Trust and was an Anglo-American Open Scholar.

Carel was promoted to Reader at Imperial College London before taking up his current role as Head of Pathology at University College Dublin in 2012, where he now works within the Diabetes Complications Research Centre. He works in collaboration with Phoenix Health at the MedFit centre in Dublin where patients undergoing bariatric surgery at Phoenix’s Belfast centre can be assessed and followed up.
