Will I lose my hair after weight loss surgery?

At any one moment in time most of the hair on your scalp is in the growing phase, but a small minority of hair is in a ‘resting’ phase. Any shock to the body such as pregnancy or rapid weight loss can cause more of the hair to enter this resting phase. Hair that is in the resting phase tends to fall out about 3 months later. It follows that procedures that will help your body shift weight quicker such as the gastric sleeve or gastric bypass may result in more ‘moulting’ and thinning about 7-12 months after surgery. Gastric band patients tend to notice very little difference in hair loss or thinning as the amount of weight lost is less and it is lost more slowly.
